Self Care

How To Care For Yourself When You’re Depressed

Depression will make you want to stay at home and in bed for days on end binging your favorite TV shows. Life happens, and sometimes there are things we cannot control, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t take care of yourself even when you’re down. Here are ways you can make personal care possible when you’re depressed.

Maintain Showers

No matter how depressed you get, still shower. Not showering will only make you feel uncomfortable and in turn make you feel worse, but showers will make you feel even that little bit better. If you’re in the mood to sulk, why not upgrade that shower to a bath. Throw in some bath bombs and bring a good book.

Easy Food

During this time, you’re not going to have a lot of motivation to cook, so when you know you’re going to be in an episode, make sure you’ve got easy food in the fridge, so you’re still able to eat. Sandwiches and peanut butter are a great option. They’re easy to prepare and won’t cost a lot. Best of all, they’re filling, and there’s minimal clean up after.

Keep Track

The best way to get yourself out of this situation is to let out your feelings. A part of personal care is to actively help yourself. If you’re unmotivated to journal in order to express your feelings, try a video diary, or even an audio diary. The best way to practice personal care is to keep track of your progress as you gradually make yourself feel better.

Your Corner

Pick a comforting corner in your home or apartment, whether that be your bedroom or just a comfortable spot in your living room by the TV. Grab some pillows and make your corner comfortable. Having a good spot for personal care to relax in while you aren’t your best can only make you feel better.
